Porcelain Dental Crowns

If you have a severely broken, damaged, or decayed tooth, you are likely to need a dental crown. While some minor cosmetic problems can be addressed with veneers, more serious problems that weaken the structure of your tooth must be repaired with a dental crown.

Fortunately, porcelain dental crowns mimic your natural tooth’s appearance and will be matched in color to the rest of your teeth. Today’s dental crowns are made with state-of-the art materials making them very strong and durable. As a result, they provide the strength and structure your weakened tooth needs to function normally again.

Benefits of Porcelain Crowns

If you have a badly infected tooth, you will either need a root canal or an extraction. Choosing a root canal allows you to save your tooth, but it will need to be protected with a crown.

Porcelain crowns do not contain metal, so they look identical to your natural teeth. They also allow light to filter through, just as your natural enamel does. Additionally, porcelain crowns are highly biocompatible, making it unlikely that you will have an unpleasant reaction or experience with them.

Because porcelain crowns come in an unlimited range of colors, we are able to precisely match your new crown to your existing teeth. Plus, porcelain crowns are designed to be durable, so they are a long-lasting solution to repair your teeth.

Porcelain dental crowns are also used in conjunction with dental implants. They fit over the implant, creating a beautiful smile that looks and functions like your natural teeth.

What to Expect When Getting a Crown

Your dentist may recommend a porcelain crown as a preventative measure to strengthen a weakened or damaged tooth, to protect the integrity of your tooth after a root canal, or as part of a dental implant. Additionally, crowns may be used as a cosmetic procedure to cover discolored teeth, straighten slightly crooked teeth, or reshape poorly developed teeth.

Your dental crown will require two appointments. During the first appointment, we’ll reshape your tooth to allow the crown to fit over it. Then, we’ll make a mold to send to the lab that creates your crown. Finally, we’ll place a temporary crown over your tooth to protect it while your permanent crown is being made.

You’ll have your second appointment two to three weeks later. At this appointment, we’ll remove your temporary crown and replace it with your permanent crown. Then, we’ll make any needed adjustments to fine-tune your fit. Once we’re sure your crown is working perfectly, you’ll leave with a beautiful restoration that looks and feels similar to your natural teeth.

Crowns with Dental Implants

Placing a crown with a dental implant involves a longer process. Because implants are placed directly into your bone, you’ll need time to heal. It’s essential that your implant has time to fuse with the bone. As a result, you won’t receive your crown right away.

Once you have healed, however, we’ll replace your missing tooth with a crown that beautifully matches the rest of your teeth. The crown is placed over your implant and restores full function to your tooth.
