Dental Implants: Reclaim a more youthful appearance

Dental implants are a unique form of tooth replacement that gives you a completely new tooth, root and all. Because of the way they’re made, they are the most realistic-looking option available, and they also feel just like your original teeth. With implants, you won’t have to worry about dentures moving out of place or developing a shrunken look to your face.

How Dental Implants Work

Dental implants are the only form of tooth replacement that is set directly into the jawbone. The root portion of the new tooth is shaped like a screw and is made of titanium. Bone will naturally bond to titanium, creating a firm foundation for your new teeth. This bond also means the implant helps prevent jawbone atrophy, which occurs any time a tooth is lost. The crown portion of your new tooth is made of tooth-colored porcelain or resin, and is color-matched so your teeth look bright and natural.

When you bite, chew, or talk, implants stay put. They will never shift or fall out, as can happen with dentures. You can also eat anything you like with implants—crunchy or chewy foods won’t dislodge them—and you don’t have to worry about balancing the food on both sides of your mouth to prevent shifting, as you often have to do with dentures.

Am I a Good Candidate for Implants?

Before deciding on implants, you should consult with your dentist. Most people with missing teeth are good candidates for implants, but some conditions need to be addressed before implant surgery, and some situations can mean your implants won’t heal correctly.

Some things you should talk about with your implant dentist include:

  • Medications you are taking, especially medication for osteoporosis
  • Any systemic problems you have, like diabetes or autoimmune problems
  • Whether or not you smoke

Before deciding on implants, your dentist will also want to determine:

  • If you have gum disease, which must be treated before implant surgery
  • If you have sufficient bone mass to support traditional implants or if an implant-secured denture would be a better option
  • If you require bone grafts or sinus lifts

A consultation with your dentist will help determine your individual situation and the best options for your treatment. Contact us at the office of Dr. Anna Cowdin today!
